Hey everyone, my name is Kathryn Manning. I am a senior at Gardner-Webb University, where I study communications and Spanish. I will be graduating in May, and I'm still deciding exactly what I want to be when I grow up. In my free time, I love to travel (I've been to 30 of the 50 states), do any kind of high adrenaline activity (like skydiving, parasailing) and spending time with friends and family. I have always loved movies. My dad is a member of the Broadcast Film Critics' Association, so I guess you could say movie-watching runs in my blood. I've always loved watching film awards shows, and I recently got the chance to attend the Critics' Choice Awards in Santa Monica, CA. It was an incredible experience to be in the same room as some of my favorite filmmakers and watch them receive the recognition that they so richly deserve. When it comes to choosing a movie to watch, I tend to be drawn to comedies, because I think they provide a nice escape from whatever stress I might be dealing with that day. Some of my favorites in this category are 13 Going on 30, RV, and Elf. But, I'm hardly ever disappointed when I venture outside of my comfort zone and watch other genres, such as action adventure, musical, or drama. For instance, one of my new favorites is The Greatest Showman, a movie that I didn't expect to fall in love with. I like a musical every now and then, but let's just say I'm not like my friend, who has memorized every lyric to every Broadway song ever recorded. However, there was a magic to this film that reeled me in and has me belting out the soundtrack in my car, house, and hotel room. Each song has distinct musical roots, whether country, gospel, opera, or others. Song composers Benj Pasek and Justin Paul may be my new favorites. In addition to the soundtrack, the movie was perfectly cast, the choreography was incredible, and the set design and costumes were spot-on. I'm also a fan of movies in which characters have to overcome great obstacles, and supporting characters emerge to help them along their journey. Some of my favorites in this category are Forrest Gump and I Am Sam. Others are based on true stories, such as The Impossible or Unbroken. I am amazed at the raw humanity shown in these movies, such as the desperation that Jack O'Connell's character undergoes as he fights to survive in a Japanese prison camp in Unbroken or the determination of Sean Penn's character as he tries to prove that he is a capable father in I Am Sam. When I see a movie, I want to see the actor or actress as their characters. I want to be so completely absorbed in the story that I don't have time to think about anything else. Unfortunately, I've seen actors and actresses whose work has fallen flat and left me unimpressed. For example, I am not a huge fan of Abigail Breslin or Chloe Grace Moretz. As child actresses, I thought that they were funny and spunky. However, I have not seen them transition well into roles in adulthood. For example, in New Year's Eve, Breslin appeared very distant from her character. In some ways, her performance was boring. On the other hand, in Moretz's role in The 5th Wave, she overacted and over-exaggerated fear and mistrust. In both movies, I was distracted by the acting rather than invested in the characters and the story. I'm glad I could share a little bit about myself and what I look for in films.
