What would you do if you witnessed an assassination attempt on the President of the United States? Would you notice details that other witnesses did not? Political thriller Vantage Point explores this and more.
Starring the likes of Dennis Quaid and Forest Whitaker, the story takes place at a counterterrorism international summit in Spain. Shortly after the U.S. President takes the stand, he is shot. Within several minutes, there are two explosions. Over the course of the movie, we see the shooting and bombings from different character perspectives with the ultimate goal of figuring out who is behind it all.

Whitaker perfectly portrays Howard Lewis, an innocent bystander who is thrust into an extraordinary event. His raw emotion and protective instincts are evident as he tries to solve the crime and rescue others along the way.
Film composer Atli Örvarsson also does a fantastic job. As I was watching some of the more intense scenes, such as when Secret Service Agent Barnes (Quaid) is involved in a car chase, I realized that my level of fear and racing heartbeat was intensified by the music.
Director Pete Travis is obviously familiar with conspiracy theories and the twists and turns that accompany them. It seems that he is relaying this constant message throughout the film: trust your instincts.

Unfortunately, there are also several components that I did not like. For example, the editing and screenwriting are not executed nearly as well as they could be. While the story is an interesting concept, the ending is rushed and incredibly disappointing. Also, due to the many moving parts of the story combined with the poor editing, I was left confused most of the time.
Due to language, violence, and graphic images, viewers should be 13 or older. Fans of conspiracy theories and the action/adventure genre would be more drawn to this film.
Although there are some promising elements to this film, these things are outweighed by the dissatisfying screenwriting and editing.
MPAA Rating: PG-13
Film Grade: C+
